Description

In 1625, whilst Mary was praying during a journey, God made known to her the excellence of the religious state, showing her clearly that its strength does not consist in any temporal power, but in God alone before whose greatness she beheld the might of all created beings to melt away and vanish.

The Scene

Mary Ward and her companions are in a coach which was loaned to them by a Cardinal.

There are many servants who may have come with the coach.

Jesus appears to her in her prayer - dressed in the usual red and blue as in other paintings.

They are on a journey between Rome and San Casciano.
