Description

In 1619 at Saint-Omer, when Mary was fervently thanking God for the grace of her vocation, He showed her clearly that to help to save souls is a far greater gift than the monastic life or even than martyrdom itself.

The Scene

This is a complex painting with three groupings.

It includes men and women who have died for their faith - martyrs.

Beside the martyrs are the founders of various contemplative orders. Benedict and Clare, Bridget and Pachomius. Francis of Assisi and Scolastica, Dominic and Teresa of Avila.

In the foreground: a large Mary Ward with many people from around the world.

Two figures in long tunics with cloaks worn crosswise give a distinctly Biblical impression.
