Description

As Mary feared that her desire for martyrdom was somewhat diminishing, she betook herself to prayer, lest any want of co-operation on her part should have caused this. Then God revealed to her that the martyrdom He expected of her was to consist in the perfect observance of the three evangelical counsels in the religious state.

The Scene

Three women in a united one form represent the three vows (promises) that religious women take.

From left to right: Chastity (remaining faithful to God), Poverty (living simply), and Obedience (listening to God and others).

On the left: a church gathering with a preacher being whispered to by a 'devil' from the underworld.

On the right: Mary going to a monastery of St Clare where she would devote her life to God.
